You must be excited. Love the Breakfast Club reference and the trailer looks great! Looking forward to the movie.

Thank you, Gwen! Yes, it's a been a wonderful and fascinating experience so far. :-)

When I was growing up, the closest thing we had to this was an HBO special called The Truth About Alex. I just hope you realize that as profound an impact as that show had on me, this movie will be having a very deep impact on a new generation. Kudos to you Brent. Kudos to you!

It's a whole new world, isn't it, Johnny? Things aren't perfect, but they're soooooo much better. It's fascinating to be alive to see the change.

Thanks for the comment. (For me, it was an AfterSchool Special called "What if I'm Gay?" I waited all day to watch…)

Congratulations on Geography Club making it to the big screen. If it's even half as good as your books it will be a great movie. Here's to many more.

    • Brent Hartinger 14 February 2013 at 7:39 pm #

Thanks, Sam! I working on it (many more movies, that is…). Appreciate the nice words.

Am I the only person who got finished watching that trailer and thought "hoooooold on a sec……"?

I mean… what's with the white washing? The vast majority of the "normal" characters are white. Not that that matters or anything but I saw maybe one person of color that could have identified with the "popular" crowd. Also, why is Russel on the football team? I mean it's been about four years since I read the book but like… I'm almost positive that didn't happen…

And lastly WHY ARE MOST OF THE ACTORS REALLY HOT AND IN THEIR 20S!?!?! I'm sick and tired of 20somethings playing kids that are supposed to be in their mid-teens… The only recent teen movie I've seen that had actors that actually looked their age was in The Perks of Being A Wallflower… I mean it does give teenagers who will be looking at this movie a disgustingly twisted view of how you're supposed to look when you're in high school… the only people who looked like they belonged in high school were the typical high school stereotypes.

There are DEFINITELY a lot of things wrong with that trailer. But hey, yakno, no judgement. My expectations were never really that high for it anyway… It would have been an epic task to make a movie as good as that book…

Congrats on finally getting it on screen.

I was a senior in high school when I discovered, " The Geography Club." Being one of two "out" gay guys in a school of over two thousand kids, I felt like I'd finally found "someone" to relate to. I laughed, cried, and hoped for Russel, as if he were a friend of mine– honestly, I continue to with each new book of the series. I'm 25 now, yet still relate, as if it were me in the story.

Thanks for the sneak peak and congrats on the movie, I can't wait to see it and look forward to many more!

    • Brent Hartinger 21 February 2013 at 7:29 am #

Hey Joshua, that is so sweet of you to say! I'm honored and humbled the books made you feel a little less alone. You made my night! :-)

P.S. I'm sure Russel would be your friend.

I have been so excited about this ever since I heard they were turning it into a movie, and it looks AMAZING! I did notice just from the trailer, that there are changes from the book, and that does make me sad, because the book was flawless, but the movie still looks amazing, and I can't wait!

    • Brent Hartinger 1 March 2013 at 9:37 pm #

There are some changes, but that's okay. The movie is a different thing from the book. But I still think people are going to like it a lot. :-)

First read this book when I was about 13 and loved it then. Have re-read it a few times since and now I must re-read it before the movie. Very much looking forward to it. Also, congrats on the success :D Have loved all your work so far and hope to keep seeing great things from you.

    • Brent Hartinger 8 March 2013 at 6:40 pm #

Thank you, that's really sweet of you to say. I hope you're pleased with how the movie turned out. :-)

I am so excited for this I really am, I have been waiting on it for so very long, but I have to say the changes are a little well idk, I've read the entire series and loved everything about them and I hope that the movie will be different from the trailer because in the trailer it looks like Min and Russel don't know each other because there supposed to be best friends, and she isn't on the movie poster, I just don't want to lose Min in this because I love her so much in the books, its been since my 10th grade year since I read geography club, I am 21 tomorrow so its been a good many years so maybe I should read it over again to see if maybe I am wrong, that's my main problem is that Min should be a bigger character. And that Min and him created the club together, thats also very key, I'm sorry for complaining I am very happy about the movie just don't want to lose Min in this again repeating myself and I am sorry. As you said there are a bunch of changes from the book and the movie, so I will understand that and I hope we get to see even more movies come from this one, but lets not forget Min, shes key in the last two books.

I was in the bleachers in all the football scenes! The actors are super attractive! Can't wait for this to come out.

    • Brent Hartinger 13 March 2013 at 6:15 am #

That's funny. I was in the bleachers too! (They filmed me for a cameo, but they ended up not being able to use it.) Maybe we were sitting by each other!

  11. Ryan 13 March 2013 at 9:16 am #

I hope this does the film festival rounds, especially the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. Have looked forward to seeing this on screen since I first read your novel many years ago. Well done, Brent!

    • Brent Hartinger 14 March 2013 at 6:41 am #

      Thanks, Ryan. I appreciate that!

I know it will play a few festivals, but how many depends on the details of its theatrical distribution. I just want it to be available to as many people as possible as SOON as possible. :-)

  12. George P. 18 March 2013 at 8:35 pm #

I read the series last year and was really hyped up to hear that a film adaptation was in the works. Glad to see it finally happening, and I think it looks nice so far! Any word on a slated release date?

    • Brent Hartinger 20 March 2013 at 5:05 am #

Thank you very much, George. No word on a release date just yet, but I know they're working on it now.

  13. Joseph M. 21 March 2013 at 2:56 am #

I can not wait for this! I honestly thought that this movie would never be seen like so many others of it's kind but I'm glad to see I was wrong. Also I can not wait to read the 4th GC book. It's feela like coming home! Not to mention it will be a well deserved break from academic reading. I miss reading stuff that isn't related to my major.

    • Brent Hartinger 21 March 2013 at 4:59 am #

Thank you, Joseph. Truthfully, after a while, I kinda thought the movie wouldn't ever happen either. A nice surprise.

Hope you enjoy the new one. :-)

That trailer doesn't look like your book at all!!! I hope the movie proves me wrong.

Nice! That's one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

  17. Frack 30 April 2013 at 8:18 am #

One question…when is it being released? Cant find a release date anywhere.

    • Brent Hartinger 18 May 2013 at 7:11 am #

      Hi Frack!

There is no "official" release date just yet, but the plan is for a theatrical release, hopefully this fall. Number of theaters and cities is all to be determined. That's part of what the film festivals are all about — it depends on how well audiences like the movie, and how it is received by critics (so far, so good!)

After that, yes, it will definitely be on DVD and on-demand.

  18. Kyle 14 May 2013 at 2:21 pm #

what Frack said. when is it getting released???
    It shows this on IMDB.
Italy 25 April 2013 (Torino GLBT Film Festival)
USA 27 April 2013 (Newport Beach International Film Festival)
USA 2 May 2013 (Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival)
Is it going to be a straight to DVD title then?
    or what?
